Press Release Announcement

Dr Turki Faisal Al Rasheed attendance at the Gulf Research Meeting, Cambridge

Dr Turki Faisal Al Rasheed will be attending the 4th Annual Gulf Research Meeting at the University of Cambridge, UK from 2nd-5thJuly 2013 as workshop director for the“Sustainable Development Challenges in the GCC”workshop.

Dr Al Rasheed,a Visiting Research Fellow at Liverpool John Moores University, will be participating together with his LJMU colleagues Professor David Bryde and Dr Yusra Mouzughi as workshop directors on “Sustainable Development Challenges in the GCC”.

Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are increasingly being faced with the same challenges that western countries have faced in terms of how to balance the need to develop their economies while at the same time taking into account the impact of such developments on the environment, communities and individuals – the classic concepts of “profit” vs. “planet” vs. “people” or balancing the Triple Bottom Line of “environmental”, “economic” and “social” sustainability.

During the meeting, the workshop directors Prof Bryde, Dr Mouzughi and Dr Al Rasheed will be discussing with the participants the following themes of the workshop:

  1. General

  2. Urban Development, Planning and Real Estate

  3. Climate Change, Environment and Energy

  4. Water Management

  5. Public and Private Sector Issues

  6. Knowledge and Awareness.

Around 5,000 invitations were sent worldwide. From the outset, the selection of the papers for the Sustainable Development Challenges workshop was difficult, as the directors had to choose from over 45 excellent proposals, covering a broad spectrum of critical sustainable development issues currently facing Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region. Sixteen papers were finally selected from those submitted and will be presented by each of the participants.

The workshop will conclude with a review and action plans.
